The National Archive has acquired a packet of 144 glass plaques with unpublished graphic material, such as the exhibition of a corpse during a historic moment: the meeting of the Franco troops with the gendarmes at the border on the river Runer.
It’s the 6th of February 1939, an historic moment when Franco’s troops, headed by commander Aguirre met with Coronel Baulard at the Spanish-Andorra border to request the retreat of the gendarmes from Andorra. The intention of Franco was to annex Andorra to Spain.
These unpublished photographs are of great value as the period between the wars is scarcely documented in Andorra. They come from a library in Barcelona and it is believed that the photographer may have ties with Andorra and that he took the photos between 1933 and 1939. From the National Archive they have explained that they are following clues as to the identity of the person who took the photographs.
