The Congress Centre of Andorra la Vella welcomed this past Saturday, the final of the first edition of the Micro First Lego League. A total of nine teams from the Andorran School system competed in this robotic tournament which has 280.000 participants all over the world.

The El Ganxo team from Ordino won the competition, beating the Monoplay team from Santa Coloma and the Mama Juana team from Encamp. The knowledge of the participants was put to test as they had to programme their robots to overcome a series of challenges and obstacles. This challenge required the participants to design, build and programme a robot with pieces of Lego in order to solve pre-established missions using engineering concepts. Two other tests in this final have been that of values and the scientific project.

This competition is a pilot test for Andorra and was promoted by the Education and Youth Ministry with the support of Andorra Telecom and the company AndoRobots. At the prize-giving ceremony the prizes were handed out by the Education and Youth Minister, Roser Suñé, the Secretary of State for Economic Diversification, Josep Maria Missé and the CEO of Andorra Telecom, Jordi Nadal. Roser Suñé emphasized how the First Lego League promotes inherent values such as innovation, creativity and team-work linked to science and the use of new technologies.

This is a pilot test initiated this year with the support from Andorra Telecom, which is sponsoring it with 8.000 euros, and with the Education Ministry which has allowed it to be incorporated into the planning of PERMSEA (Strategic Plan for the Renovation and Improvement of the Andorran Education System)

With this, 75 pupils from the 4th year of the 3 secondary education Andorran schools will participate on the 13th of December in a classifying test to take part in the Micro First League, a tournament organised by Lego which introduces youngsters from 10 to 16 years of age to the use of research in new technologies as well as social values and team-work.

Therefore, as of September, the nine groups have been working on the three parts of the project for the test: the creation of a robot that has to fulfill several missions, present and resolve a scientific project and display social values. From the 9 teams participating, 3 will be able to take part in the Micro First League test in Catalunya, on the 21st of February in Vic. In the case of passing the different stages, further tests with other countries could follow.
